Cedar logs would definitely resist rot better. What ever your choice be sure to borate treat them before staining.

Not sure what you mean by clean… If they just need to be wiped down use hot water and TSP. If you want to refinish them they will need to be sanded.

It’s ”Engelmann Spruce” It’s a too late now, but I would recommend that you have a local pest control company spray every spring for flies and spiders. Not sure where you are located, but call them, they may be able to help this fall with a light spray.
