If you are looking for the old cabin look I would recommend using Sherwin Williams Woodscapes solid stain. Not sure what you mean, but it sounds like you are talking about resin bleed, which there is nothing you can do to stop.

You should be working from the bottom up. Only thing I can think of that would cause it.

I would say some sort of furniture finish. If it is going to be outside in the weather plan on re-finishing it every year.
