I guess I’m confused since you want wood to stay dry. Is it a drying oil or does it always stay sticking? You may have to sand to tight the grain up and then stain.

It sounds like the door was not completely dry before you painted it. Since it has cracked you will probably have to replace it and start over again. Not sure what the white residue is about. Sounds like mold.

Never heard that before, but I suppose that it would be possible on bigger logs where the knots are loose.

Staining the bark will be very difficult. it will be harder to maintain if you let it go too long in between maintenance times.

If there is a finish on them use Murphy’s Oil soap per the label. If they are bare logs try using TSP and hot water. You may need to sand them if they are bare and dirty.

I would wait until spring and do it all at one time when the weather gets nice. Nothing is really going to happen over the winter that will hurt it.
