If it still has the Cuprinol on it I would recommend sticking with it until you strip the house back to bare wood. When that day comes you should treat it with a borate treatment and then stain it with a good quality latex stain like Lifeline.

It will need to be media blasted (corn cob or glass) then Osborn brushed. Use a latex stain like Lifeline to avoid the blackening.

Shoot them. The squirrels are probably chewing because of the borate in the wood. The woodpeckers are after bugs in the wood. Fresh stain will stop them for awhile. A suet cake feeder away from the house may deter the woodpeckers some.

It needs to be corn cob or glass blasted. DO NOT power wash it. It is being caused from the stain. You need to go to a good quality latex stain made for log homes like Life Line or Capture.
