Not true in my book. They both will require extra maintenance with heavy exposure. A good quality latex stain like LifeLine from Perma Chink will hold up just as well, if not better and is easier to maintain color.

Most log home stains require that you keep a wet edge as you apply so you will want to take 1 to 3 logs and go all the way across to avoid lap marks. I would recommend that you start at the top.
