Any good paint store should be able to tell you if it is stain or varnish with a sample. You should have the exterior caulked completely for the daylight situation. You may want to consider doing the interior also. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 for more help.

Never use paint. Sherwin Williams Woodscapes solid stain would be my choice.
You should stain as soon as possible. DO NOT use the paraffin.
They will need to be ground and then sanded to clean. Then apply a light latex stain or clear coat for interior finish.
Do not use paint, but rather solid stain. Sherwin Williams Woodscapes is a very good product. I would go with the gray.
