Do not paint it. Use a good quality latex interior stain like Life Line Interior. Call 800-564-2987 for help and to purchase.
You could try applying a little light stain, but I would experiment very carefully. Normally the whole wall has to be sanded to blend these spots in.
Sounds like the chinking on the exterior is cracked or broke loose from the logs or there is a check allowing the water to get down behind the chink and leak inside.
Probably nothing to worry about, but if you are really worried I would recommend having a structural engineer look at them.
Sanding them back to good clean wood is the best, then apply a clear sealer or a light color stain first then the clear. Call Dave at Timeless Wood Care Products for more help and the products you will need. 800-564-2987.

The Osborn will improve the finish, but there is nothing that will prevent them from turning dark and the smell will go away as the log dries.
