I would brush roofing tar on the part of the logs in the ground after applying a good borate treatment to the entire log.

You could, but more than likely as the Sikkens continues to fail under the solid stain it will peel away. Nice part about solid stain is you can do spot repair work without a lot of hassle.

I guess it depends on the condition of the varnish, but eventually it will have to come off. Stay with a good quality latex log home stain like Life Line.
